This is an attempt to get people excited about creatively managing their waste. The thinking is that whenever an object can be reused rather than buried in a landfill, it’s a worthy venture — not to mention an interesting challenge!

Our wonderful friends at Gallery Project invited us to present at their new show, Spring Collection 2010, opening Friday. We’ll have some art in the exhibit, some pieces in the fashion show, and we’ll be screen printing LIVE. Bring in old clothes and we’ll reform them! All the mayhem starts at 6 and runs until 9. Saturday sees us making our maiden voyage to Yes Farm, for their second recycled fashion show. If you forgotten button ups and hoodies couldn’t make it to Gallery Project, bring them to Yes Farm and we’ll happily LIVE print on them there. Make sure to check out everyone well’s sweet, sweat fueled work.

Both shows are free and full of possibilities. Bring lovers, rivals, and flourishing acquaintances.

Lunchbox Shirt in purple, natural and silver

The Lunchbox shirt is a three part story told in fabric. Indoors the girl appears without any colors around her, outdoors (as shown) the sun and sky appear) and at night the monsters come out. But currently I’m having a rough time. Which colors should I use? Currently I think I’ll be hitting up the light purple and the silvers.

It’s incredible how much changes from digital to print, especially with our beloved medium, screen printing, as you get all the tactile textures. Interest in concert posters appears to be spreading amongst the legions of baseless nostalgic youth (that’s us!). Maybe after all the sterile participation of live concert streams and stolen mp3s, we’re looking for something we can literally hold on to, may explain why everybody and their half sister stacks vinyl. There’s a new documentary about the flourish of concert posters, Died Young, Stayed Pretty, that looks awfully interesting. Let us know if anyone has seen it yet.

Partake in the creative expression of art and music and celebrate the birth of three yellow barn organizers: Jon, Robin, Mary and friend Leah. The aim of this event is to bring people in the community together to produce and share in art and music, work together and celebrate. We will have little stations for painting on dumpstered wood, light graffiti, random array of unique instruments, paper crane wish-making, as well as a potluck, games, and dancing.

So come revel in our little community celebration; bring food, bring your lovely selves, bring a friend, bring something to screen print on, and dance to the sexy tunes provided by Charles Trees and Mogi Grumbles!!…The day before Labor Day—Sunday August 6th

We’ll be live printing on the spot so you can get a custom printed shirt on the spot! Bring clothes from home and we’ll rejuvenate them with ancient Chinese medicine, screen printing! We’ll have shirts on site too so don’t worry about lugging your closet around if you don’t want to.

Following last year’s unprotected ink party, we’re happy to make our  second live screen printing appearance at the DIY Street Fair. We’ll be there Saturday (19th) 11am-Midnight and Sunday (20th) 11am-9pm but the fair kicks off Friday (18th) @ 6pm with world class musicians.

We’ll be posting contests and more details as the date approaches, so stay tuned it.

This tutorial is mainly aimed at knowledgeable screen printers looking to get a value range with limited colours,

Step 1: Scan your  drawing
We’ll trust you to figure out the drawing bit, after a few sketches, make a cleaned up final copy in the approximate desired size for your screen print and scan it in as 300 dpi jpeg.

For this tutorial we used a majestic peacock design Zannasour drew for our lovers ramble rousing on the east coast, Belikos, they’re a super good party awesome rock band, send them some love.

Step 2: Import it into Photoshop and grayscale your image
If you haven’t done so while scanning it in, convert your image into grayscale.

Step 3: Bitmap your image

Right above grayscale, you’ll notice the bitmap mode is now available

Make sure to keep your resolution at 300ppi, set method at halftone screen. In the next window set the frequency to whatever your exposure setup can handle, we set ours to 60 lines per inch, angle doesn’t matter, and set shape to round.

Your final result should look like this:

You’ll notice all the pixils making gray values get converted into black dots ranging in size. This effect produces a range of values with one colour, a perfect tool for screen printers looking to limit their colours but produce great details. Use this as your positive for making your screen. So although we wont be doing any more SOWA events I will certainly be missing those kind folks. You should certainly check them out if you’re in the Boston Area, Chromalab makes picking beautiful colors seem simple, but just walking by their booth gives you a jolt of pleasant feeling. Kind of like a room with a nice smell, the colors leap off their furniture and imbue the air with a hum and joyous glow.
